Prague
Prague Smells Like Food. I Mean That as a Compliment.
One of Europe's most visited cities also happens to be one of its most underrated food cities. Here's where to eat, drink, and caffeinate your way through it.
There's a moment when you turn a corner in Old Town Prague and the smell hits you before anything else does. Grilled meat, fresh pastry, something frying somewhere nearby. It's one of the more sensory arrivals in European travel, and it happens immediately, before you've found your hotel or figured out the transit system.
Prague rewards people who pay attention to food. That's not the reputation it has, and the tourist-facing version of the city does its best to reinforce the wrong idea: overpriced schnitzels in heavy dining rooms near the clock tower, beer halls designed for groups of twelve, menus printed in eight languages and good in none of them. That part is real and easy to stumble into.
The rest of the city is more interesting. Prague has a Michelin-starred restaurant doing some of the more serious tasting menu work in Central Europe. It has a coffee scene that arrived late and made up for it with intent. It has street food worth eating while you walk and neighborhood spots that have nothing to prove to anyone passing through.

Scratch-made, no shortcuts, no frozen dough. The flagship on Náměstí Míru sits in a building with restored 19th-century murals depicting old spice trade routes. At this location, the kolaches were fluffy, chewy, sweet and savory in one bite, and the sandwiches traveled perfectly on a road trip. Solid.

Tiny specialty bar on a cobblestone Old Town street, built by Adam and Zdeněk around one idea: no distractions, just the coffee. Beans come from Round Hill and their own roastery, Candycane Coffee, pulled through a Kees van der Westen machine. Nordic-style cups, acidic, berry forward, built to showcase the fruit rather than roast over it, a real departure from Prague's dark-roast default. A couple of window seats, a few pastries, nothing else needed. Best coffee in Old Town.

Set inside a medieval hall in the Týn Courtyard, one of Prague's oldest sites and once a fortified merchants' compound where foreign traders paid customs under royal protection. That trading history is the reason a landlocked city has a serious seafood restaurant, live lobster, fresh oysters, daily catches, anchored by longtime executive chef Petr John through two name changes. Delicious risotto, solid meat-forward Czech options for non-seafood eaters. Old-school service, occasionally brisk. Elegant, romantic, well executed rather than exciting.

Old Town institution named for its proximity to historical political sites, with local lore tying it to 19th-century Czech patriots who used spots like this as covert meeting rooms under Austro-Hungarian rule. No modern reinvention here, just textbook goulash, svíčková, and massive fried schnitzels in a wood-paneled room stuck happily in mid-century Prague. Cheap, loud, and unapologetically Czech, the kind of place built for cheap pilsner and hours with friends.

Started as a rotisserie stall when founder Vojta Václavík's planned pork knuckle menu got vetoed by customers who wanted the chicken instead. They were right. It's the best in Prague: juicy, seasoned, cooked with real precision. Everything here is made from scratch, down to their own fermented miso, kimchi, and hot sauces. The croquettes are crisp-edged and cheese-packed, the pickles come with a rotating lineup of sauces, and the sandwich is a genuine textural achievement. Strong vegetarian and vegan range too.
