The location explains everything else. LOOV sits inside the Týn Courtyard, the Ungelt, one of the oldest sites in Prague, dating back to the early Middle Ages. Before it was a courtyard people wandered through on the way to Old Town Square, it was a fortified, tax-protected merchants' compound, a walled yard where foreign traders had to bring their goods, store them, pay customs, and trade under royal protection.
That history of goods moving through Prague from somewhere else is the whole justification for what's on the menu. A high-end seafood restaurant, built around live lobster, fresh oysters, and daily market catches, in a landlocked Central European capital, sounds like an anomaly until you remember this exact spot has been a hub for imported luxury goods for centuries. The restaurant has changed names twice, from Rybí trh to Restaurant Ungelt to LOOV now, but the concept and the kitchen leadership under longtime executive chef Petr John have stayed consistent through all of it.
If you're not feeling seafood, the meat dishes are treated with the same amount of care.
The dining room is set inside a medieval hall with vaulted ceilings, which does most of the heavy lifting on atmosphere. It's tucked away just off the chaos of Old Town Square, simple and elegant rather than ornate, the kind of room that makes a meal feel like an event without trying too hard to convince you of that.
The food matches the room: composed, well made, not particularly interested in surprising you. The risotto was genuinely delicious. For anyone not in the mood for seafood, there are classic meat-forward Czech dishes that hold their own on the menu. Nothing here reaches for a wow moment. It reaches for consistency, and it gets there.
Service leaned old school, occasionally with the kind of brisk formality you run into at European restaurants that have been doing this a long time and aren't going to change now. It didn't sour the meal. This is a genuinely good date night spot, quiet, romantic, historic without being a museum.
