Your Nachos Have a Little Wisconsin History

Illustrative stock image of loaded nachos with melted cheese and jalapeños; not Anaya’s original plate.

International Nacho Day has a person behind the name: Ignacio “Nacho” Anaya, who created the snack in Piedras Negras, Mexico, in 1943.

When: Wednesday, October 21
Namesake: Ignacio “Nacho” Anaya
Original ingredients: Tortilla chips, melted cheese and jalapeños
Read: Google’s illustrated tribute to Anaya

Google’s account specifies Wisconsin cheese in that first plate. Anaya was working at Club Victoria when customers asked for a snack and the chef was unavailable. The improvised Nachos especiales became a menu fixture, then a much bigger habit. A remarkably productive snack emergency.
