Tomorrow’s Coffee Deserves a Cinnamon Bun

Sweden gives cinnamon buns their own day on October 4. For tomorrow’s celebration, you can pick up a pastry or make a batch of kanelbullar using Visit Sweden’s recipe by Lisa Lemke.

The dough includes freshly ground cardamom, while the filling combines butter, sugar, and cinnamon. The recipe makes approximately 40 buns and includes a lengthy final rise, so this is a Saturday project with a Sunday payoff. Freeze the extras and consider future coffee breaks handled.

Bremen Throws Germany’s Birthday Party

October 3 marks Germany’s reunification in 1990. This year, Bremen hosts the national celebration, with festivities running October 2–4.

The city center becomes a gathering place for music, food, and presentations from all 16 federal states. A dedicated food mile offers tastes from Bremen, across Germany, and beyond; the Bremen Mile stretches from fish sandwiches to rocket technology. That’s a fairly ambitious range for a weekend stroll.

The Halloween Candy With a Canadian Alias

October 2 is National Smarties Day, launched in 2022 on founder Edward Dee’s birthday. Dee brought his family from England to New Jersey in 1949 and started the candy business with two machines in a rented facility.

The familiar wafer rolls have a different identity north of the border: Rockets. The company makes candy in Union, New Jersey, and Newmarket, Ontario. A tiny piece of Halloween nostalgia, with an international backstory.

Indonesia Wears Its Heritage on Its Sleeve

October 2 is Indonesia’s National Batik Day, marking the country’s batik tradition and its recognition by UNESCO in 2009.

Artisans apply dots and lines of hot wax to cloth, then dye it. The wax protects selected areas; removing it and repeating the process builds layers of color. UNESCO’s recognition includes the techniques, symbolism, and cultural traditions surrounding the garments. Next time batik catches your eye, there’s a whole practice behind the pattern.
