World Bread Day Calls for Butter, Obviously

Official King Arthur Baking photograph of crusty bread with a sliced loaf showing its airy crumb.

October 16 is World Bread Day, and a warm, crackly loaf is a reasonable way to observe it. King Arthur’s no-knead version lets the refrigerator do much of the work.

No-Knead Crusty White Bread
Hands-on: 5 minutes
Total: 5 hours, 35 minutes, including resting
Makes: 3–4 loaves
Recipe: King Arthur Baking

The dough uses flour, water, salt and yeast, and can wait in the refrigerator for up to seven days. Bake a loaf when you want one. No starter required, just rather excellent toast tomorrow.
