Frost’s Descent, or Shuangjiang, arrives October 23 as the last of autumn’s solar terms in China’s traditional calendar. Persimmons are part of its seasonal food traditions.

When: Friday, October 23
Shopping cue: Fuyu for eating firm; Hachiya for eating very soft
Learn: Illinois Extension’s persimmon guide

A firm Hachiya can be unpleasantly astringent; let it soften fully before eating. Keep unripe fruit at room temperature, then refrigerate once ripe. Slice a Fuyu into a salad, or scoop a ripe Hachiya with a spoon. The calendar has supplied dessert.
