King Tut Packed Bread and Wine for Eternity

Howard Carter’s team uncovered the top step of a staircase leading to Tutankhamun’s tomb on November 4, 1922. The treasure was not all gold: burial provisions included semicircular loaves filled with Christ’s-thorn fruit and two dozen wine jars labeled with vintages, places of origin and, usually, vintners. The wine evaporated long ago, but the labels remain a remarkably modern touch.
