Deviled Eggs Got Their Name From the Heat

National Deviled Egg Day is a good excuse to notice that “deviled” once described a flavor, not a moral failing.
National Deviled Egg Day
When: Monday, Nov. 2
Make them: American Egg Board’s classic deviled eggs
The first known print use of “deviled” for food dates to 1786. By the 19th century, the word commonly meant highly seasoned, spicy or zesty. Stuffed eggs are much older, but mustard, pepper and paprika explain the modern name rather nicely.
