The Sandwich Was Named for a Hungry Earl

A stacked Reuben sandwich filled with corned beef, Swiss cheese and sauerkraut.

National Sandwich Day lands on the birthday of John Montagu, fourth Earl of Sandwich, born November 3, 1718. The food took his title, although bread wrapped around fillings existed long before him.

National Sandwich Day
When: Tuesday, November 3
Namesake: John Montagu, fourth Earl of Sandwich
Food history: Who Invented the Sandwich?

The gambling-table origin story remains disputed. The first known written use of “sandwich” for food appeared in Edward Gibbon’s diary in 1762. Montagu helped popularize the name; thousands of years of filled flatbreads did the groundwork.
