Hexe Coffee in Roscoe Village isn't the best at any one thing. It's the best at all of them at once.
Does Hexe have the best coffee in Chicago? I'm not going to argue that. Does it have the best pastries? Not going to argue that either. Best breakfast sandwich? Same answer. These are not complaints because they're really good. But this is the whole point.
In the Venn diagram of coffee quality, pastry program, and pure Chicago vibes, Hexe sits exactly in the middle. It is the sum of its parts, and those parts add up to one of the best places in the city to spend a morning.
The patio is the reason. Wedged into a triangular corner where Clybourn meets Diversey, it should feel like a busy intersection, because it is one. It doesn't. Trees and shrubs do enough work that you forget the traffic entirely. You're just sitting outside in one of the better outdoor spaces in Roscoe Village, surrounded by plants, dogs parked happily next to their owners, and the kind of unhurried conversation that only happens when everyone has good coffee in front of them. Spring, summer, fall — this patio is an argument for staying in Chicago. In the afternoon they pour beer. There is no complaint to be filed.
Inside, the design is confident and specific. Dark walls against natural light. Macabre decoration that matches the branding on their in-house roasted coffee bags. A little gothic, a little witchy, fully intentional. It's a different kind of well-designed Chicago coffee shop, which is saying something in a city with no shortage of well-designed coffee shops.
The pastry program is made entirely in house, with daily specials that give you a reason to come back and see what's changed. The whole wheat cinnamon rolls are weekend only and very good. I have strong feelings about cinnamon rolls with coffee and these earn their spot. Sweet and savory options both. If you want a full breakfast, the biscuit sandwich is the move. The biscuits are made fresh, flaky, substantial. I've brought Southern friends here. They've approved. That's the only endorsement that matters for a biscuit.
On a good morning the line is out the door. It moves fast and you can almost always find a seat even when the wait feels long. The kind of place where the line is proof of something rather than a warning against it.
Hexe is a great Chicago place. That's a specific designation. It means it understands where it is, who it's for, and what it's trying to do. Not every coffee shop manages that. This one does.
