Kiss These Grits
Logan Square’s 1977 greasy spoon is cheap, fast and fine, with one side dish it absolutely nails.
Cozy Corner has been serving breakfast on Milwaukee Avenue since 1977. It’s a small local chain now, with a handful of locations around the city, but this is the original, and it has outlasted nearly fifty years of change on this stretch. Logan Square built a whole dining and nightlife scene around it. Cozy Corner kept making breakfast.
It’s a greasy spoon in the truest sense: cheap, fast and steps from the California Blue Line stop. If you need a quick breakfast, it’s a workhorse in exactly the right spot. That also means it gets busy. Around 11 a.m., especially on weekends, expect a line. There’s free parking out front, but only about ten spots, so don’t bank on it. Then again, who’s driving to Logan Square for breakfast?
When I judge a diner, I start with the pancakes. Are they light and airy? Is there a little crisp at the edge? Do they spring back when you press them? Cozy Corner’s land squarely in the middle. Not bad, not memorable. That’s the story for most of the menu. You won’t be unhappy with what shows up, and you won’t be talking about it later either.
The potatoes were the weak spot, soft and underseasoned when you want crisp edges and salt.
Then there are the grits. Order them over the potatoes, every time, and get them with cheese. They’re creamy and seasoned right, and if that sounds like a low bar, it isn’t. Grits are easy to get wrong, and plenty of kitchens do. Cozy Corner nails them.
Service is pure diner. Friendly, but not too friendly. The staff is turning tables, so efficiency wins over attentiveness, but nobody’s ignoring you. Your food shows up, you eat, and you’re back out the door.
Fine is exactly the right word. Cozy Corner is straightforward, there’s nothing here to get excited about, and it gets the job done. Hungry, hungover or just in the neighborhood and craving a greasy spoon? It’ll take care of you. Just get the grits.
Stay up-to-date
