Dot's Has Everything in Place. The Coffee Needs to Catch Up.
A beautiful new corner café in Roscoe Village with serious coffee sourcing and a pink marble bar. Opened in 2026. Give it time.
I spotted this one from a scooter. The corner space at Damen and Addison caught my eye hard enough to turn my head, which is not a small thing at speed. Whatever care went into the exterior translated inside: a gorgeous pink marble bar, matching table rounds, large art on the walls, good lighting, big windows looking out onto a quiet corner of Roscoe Village. Brothers Michael and Rob Young named the place after their grandmother Dot, who recently turned 100 and apparently loves coffee and company in equal measure. The shop is built around that energy and it shows.
If I have a set of coffee shop red flags — sized cappuccinos, walls of flavoring syrups, steam wands that haven't been purged — I have a set of green flags too. Dot's was raising them fast. I saw a bag of 4LW on the counter and asked. The barista was happy to talk about it. 4LW for drip and decaf, Metric for espresso, Hexe for cold brew. That is a serious lineup from people who thought carefully about what goes in the bag. I was ready.
The coffee did not match the sourcing. The espresso read weak and without much flavor. The milk was oversteamed and took too long to cool. The iced latte was watery with an astringent finish, which usually points to under-extraction — the shot pulled too fast and too light to give the milk anything to hold onto. The specialty drinks lean sweet and syrupy, not my audience but probably finds one.
The pastries come from Publican, which raised my expectations and made the landing more confusing. Nothing was bad. Nothing was memorable either, which given the source is a surprise.
Dot's opened in spring 2026. Growing pains are real and sourcing this well this early suggests the intention is there. The space is already doing its job — genuinely lovely for a long coffee with someone on a good Chicago afternoon. Come for that. Check back on the coffee in a few months.
Stay up-to-date
