WG Pizza Is Exactly What It Says It Is
A technically correct Chicago tavern pizza that knows what it is and doesn't pretend otherwise
WG Pizza is a Southport transplant of Alex's Washington Gardens, a suburban institution that moved into the city and kept doing exactly what it was already doing. Paper thin cracker crust. Square cut. Traditional ingredients. The Chicago tavern style executed without deviation or embellishment.
We were not unhappy with it. We were also not thinking about it the next morning. That is both the review and the endorsement, depending on what you're looking for.
The pizza is well-baked and properly crispy in the way tavern style pizza should be. The crust holds up, the ingredients are solid, and it arrives as exactly the thing you ordered. There is genuine craft in doing a simple thing correctly, and WG does the simple thing correctly.
Where it shines is as a delivery option. For the nights you do not want to leave the couch and you want a technically honest pizza that will not disappoint you, WG is a very good answer if you're in Lakeview. It will not be the best pizza you've ever had. It will absolutely be a good pizza that you finish without complaint.
The occasional tavern takeover events, where guest chefs from around the city create a special pizza for the menu, are worth keeping an eye on if you want a reason to go in person.
