The Bongo Room

Bongo Room Was Doing This Before Anyone Else

That Doesn't Mean It's Still the Best at It.

Before brunch was a thing in Chicago, Bongo Room was doing it on Milwaukee Avenue in Wicker Park. The elaborate sweet-stack pancake, the dessert-for-breakfast format, the long weekend line out the door — Bongo Room was running that play in the early 1990s before it became the template every brunch spot in the city eventually borrowed from. That context matters. It just does not fully redeem the pancakes.

Walking in feels like a time capsule in the best and most complicated way. Blonde wood tables, angular furniture, chairs with slotted backs, saturated colors that were absolutely the hottest shit in 1999. John Latino created the rotating seasonal menus and was the creative engine behind the place. He passed away unexpectedly in January 2024 at 58. His partner has kept it open. The room looks exactly like it did when they built it, charming or frozen in time depending on your read.

I'm gonna be real honest with you about the pancakes. For a place that hangs its entire hat on them, they are medium at best. A little flat, a little overly crispy at the edges. The sauces look different from each other on the menu and mostly taste the same when they arrive. Powdered sugar glaze variations that all run sweet, and after the first pancake, too sweet. They are not bad. They are just not the reason a place should have a line out the door.

The savory side of the menu is where Bongo Room actually holds up. Nothing surprising, nothing to write home about, but solid breakfast food that does what it is supposed to do. The home fries are the best thing on the plate. One side gets properly crispy and they nail that. If you are hungover and just need someone to feed you a large, reliable breakfast, this is a fine answer. Portions are big. You will not leave hungry.

The crowd is exactly what you would expect from a Milwaukee strip brunch spot on a Saturday. Young, loud, cocktails at large tables, good time being had. The space is cavernous enough to handle it. The line moves.

The sad truth is that the sweet breakfast format Bongo Room invented has been done better elsewhere since. Other places took the idea and pushed it further. Bongo Room stayed exactly where it was, which is worth respecting and also worth being honest about.
