Not Every Coffee Shop Needs to Be a Scene
A solid neighborhood coffee shop with a little old-school counterculture charm.
The Avondale Coffee Club is not trying to be the most serious coffee shop in Chicago, which is part of why it works. It has a cute retro feel, a little mid-century, a little bohemian, and just enough art-school energy to feel independent without trying too hard.
The coffee is solid. They serve Reprise Roasters out of Evanston, carry a few other roasters for retail, and offer pour overs if you want to slow down a little. They also sell Fellow products, filters, and other home coffee essentials, which tells you they care about the craft even if the experience stays casual.
The baked goods are fine. They are not the reason to go, but they get the job done if you need something with your coffee.
The real win is the space: easygoing, rarely chaotic, with parking in back and a covered outdoor area that might be its best little secret. Not worth crossing town for, but if you are in Avondale, this is a very good place to dip into.
