Feel sexy WFM (Working From Milli's)
Avondale's most beautiful café is also one of Chicago's best, and the chocolate chip cookie alone is worth the trip.
There is a version of a coffee shop that exists purely to be photographed. The light hits right, the stone looks expensive, the espresso machine is a sculpture. You go once, you post it, you never go back because the coffee was fine and the vibe was the whole point.
Milli by Metric is not that place. It just looks like it could be.
Walk in and the first thing you notice is the dark. Not dim. Dark. Warm and intentional, the kind of dark that makes everything feel a little more considered than it might otherwise. Orange tones bounce off natural stone running across the bar, around the custom espresso machine, up and through the room. Steam wands rise straight from the bar like they're proud of themselves. The ceilings are tall. The whole entrance feels like a room that knows it's being looked at.
Move deeper into the café and things shift. The ceilings drop. The light changes, more natural, softer. It gets intimate without losing the polish. Community tables stretch out for groups, for knitting circles that take over a corner and fill it with laughter, for the people who need to spread out with three notebooks and a problem to solve. Laptops are everywhere but so are conversations. In the summer, the outdoor space opens up, all concrete and stone softened by lush planters that make the hard materials feel alive.
The juxtaposition is the point. Industrial bones, natural warmth. It shouldn't work as well as it does.
The coffee earns the room. Barista to barista, the consistency is noticeable. Shots pulled with confidence, temperature dialed in, nothing scalding your mouth before you can taste it. There are windows at the back where you can watch the roasters work, producing beans for this flagship and for the Milli accounts spread across the city. This is a place that takes the whole chain seriously, not just the last thirty seconds of it.
The pastry program is genuinely excellent. Sweet, savory, bonbons, macarons. The range is there and the execution holds up. The passion fruit croissant is the kind of thing you eat and immediately start planning when you're coming back for another. Crunchy, flaky, rich, tart, sweet. It hits every register. The pain au chocolat doesn't mess around with the chocolate ratio, which is exactly right. The cinnamon roll is fine. I want more frosting. That's my only note.
Then there's the chocolate chip cookie. I have opinions about chocolate chip cookies the way some people have opinions about pizza or barbecue. Specific, informed, occasionally insufferable. The Milli cookie is one of the best in the city. It walks right up to the edge of burnt, just enough char on the edges to leave a nutty bitterness that cuts through the butter and the chocolate and the chew. That decision to take it one degree further than most places would is what separates a good cookie from the one you tell people about.
A few practical notes. Parking in Avondale is a sport and Milli is popular enough that the line is real on weekend mornings. Pastries move fast. If you want the passion fruit croissant, arrive like you mean it.
Stay up-to-date
