A Brewery at the Edge of Logan Square Doesn't Need You to Find It

Illinois' first combined brewery and distillery still runs exactly the way it wants to. Polish pub food, serious pickles, and a neighborhood that loves to show up.

The Maplewood sub-neighborhood that gave this brewery its name was absorbed into Logan Square before most of its current regulars were born. That quiet annexation into something larger is, in a way, the story of the block — and of the place that sits on it. Maplewood Brewery and Distillery has operated at the border of Logan Square and Avondale since 2014, when founders Adam Cieslak and Ari Megalis converted homebrewing instincts and a basement into Illinois' first combined craft brewery and distillery under a single roof. That distinction hasn't been replaced.

The building is industrial. The Lounge, the taproom attached to the production floor, lands somewhere between neighborhood bar and cocktail parlor — enough grit to tell you it belongs to the block, enough intention to tell you someone thought about it. You can see the brewhouse from your seat. The proximity is the point.

The service model is worth knowing before you arrive. You seat yourself, order by QR code, and pick up silverware and water from the communal table in the center of the room. Food comes out quickly and without ceremony. No one checks in. No one asks how everything is tasting. If that reads as cold, Maplewood will rub you wrong. If it reads as a place that respects you enough to leave you alone, it settles in fast.

What holds the room together is the food program, which takes its cues from the neighborhood rather than from standard taproom convention. Avondale carries a deep Polish heritage, and the kitchen leans into that directly rather than gesturing at it. It shows up most clearly in the pickling, which is not a garnish or an afterthought but something the kitchen clearly takes seriously. The pickled pineapple, spicy and sharp, is the kind of thing you don't see coming and then immediately need to mention to whoever you're with.

The menu rotates, but the sensibility holds. Eastern European staples translated into bar food without losing what made them interesting in the first place. Dishes built for what's in your glass rather than for what photographs well.

Happy hour runs half off shareables and a dollar off drafts. The result is a room that fills early and stays full. On good weather nights people hang out the open front windows and spill onto the patio — which is the clearest possible signal of what this place has become for the people around it. You have to know it's there to find it. The regulars know it's there. For eleven years, that has been enough.
