A Michelin Star Walked Into a Whiskey Bar. This Is That Bar.
Longman & Eagle held a Michelin star from 2011 to 2017 while serving PBR and whiskey shots. The Bib Gourmand it carries now is equally deserved and considerably less surprising.
Longman & Eagle is an old school hipster upscale dive pub. I understand that sounds like a contradiction. It is not. It is a rustic neighborhood whiskey bar that held a Michelin star for six years while serving PBR alongside precisely executed, beautifully plated food. Michelin eventually moved on to prioritize tasting menus and fine dining conventions. Longman & Eagle did not change. It still has a Bib Gourmand. It still serves PBR. The food is still excellent.
The best way I can describe the menu is upscale hipster fat girl food. It is ironic, rich, snout to tail, and unapologetically comforting. I cut my teeth in the Boulder slow food scene, so this kind of cooking has always makes sense to me. Nothing wasted, everything considered, all of it delicious.
Brunch is where it anchors itself. Sweet donuts, chicken and waffles, a sloppy joe on the rotating seasonal menu. The PBR named breakfast on the menu is not accidental — it is a statement, and a funny one, and the food backs it up so thoroughly that the irony stops mattering after the first bite. They occasionally carry a PBR NA beer as well, which brings back memories from a chapter of my life I remember only in broad strokes.
Dinner is a bit more refined but no less committed. Fresh pasta, burrata, pig heart tartare for those who want to lean into the snout to tail philosophy completely. I have never ordered anything here that disappointed me. The whiskey selection is extensive and well curated. On the other end of the spectrum the NA beer, wine, and drink selection is genuinely good, which I notice and appreciate every time.
This is a Logan Square institution that earned its reputation the right way and has kept it without softening a single edge. Go for brunch. Stay for a whiskey. Or don't. The NA options are just as considered.
