The Sloppiest Burger in Wicker Park Is Worth Every Napkin
Paul Kahan's 41-seat counter luncheonette off Damen has been quietly serving one of the best gut bombs in the city since 2014. Go hungry. Plan accordingly after.
One Off Hospitality does not miss often. The group behind The Publican, avec, and The Violet Hour opened Dove's Luncheonette in September 2014, tucked next to Big Star on Damen, and named it after a character in a Nelson Algren novel. That last detail tells you something about the sensibility at work. This is not a diner built for Instagram. It is a diner built for Wicker Park, which is a specific and useful distinction.
Forty-one seats, counter only, first-come first-served. The soundtrack runs from vinyl — Chicago soul and blues, 1960s and 70s. The kitchen operates somewhere between Northern Mexican and American Southern, which on paper sounds like a concept pitch and in practice tastes like a very good idea. Pozole and biscuits. Brisket tacos and hash. A drinks program built around tequila and mezcal that fits the food without overwhelming it. The Michelin Bib Gourmand is not a surprise if you know the One Off track record. It is confirmation.
The burger does not look like it is going to be good. That is important to say up front because the presentation is aggressively humble — the kind of sloppy, napkin-heavy plating that usually signals a kitchen cutting corners rather than making choices. At Dove's it is a choice, and it is the right one. Caramelized onions and house-made butter pickles are doing serious work underneath the mess. Halfway through, genuinely surprised. By the end, thinking about ordering another. The fries are well fried and well seasoned, which sounds like a low bar until you have eaten enough bad fries to understand it is not.
The deviled eggs belong on this menu in a way that feels considered rather than obligatory. The pimento cheese is deep in flavor with a little heat — the kind of version that makes you understand why people are serious about pimento cheese. Both fit the updated diner register Dove's is working in without feeling like they wandered over from a different concept.
The masa pancakes deserve an honest word. Masa as a pancake is an interesting idea and a nod to the kitchen's Mexican influences. They are not bad. They are also not the fluffy, tall stack you might be anticipating. Set expectations accordingly and they work. Arrive expecting a traditional pancake and you will be confused.
This is a place you go when you are hungry or hungover. You are not walking out ready to do anything ambitious. The food is well executed and genuinely delicious, and it will slow you down in the best possible way. A nap is not out of the question.
The patio, despite sitting just off the Damen and Milwaukee intersection and a short walk from the Blue Line stop, manages to feel relatively settled. Wicker Park people-watching without the full foot traffic chaos of the main drag. Worth sitting outside when the weather cooperates.
A drinks program built around tequila and mezcal that fits the food without overwhelming it. Worth noting for sober diners: a good portion of the cocktail menu substitutes NA spirits cleanly, and athletic beers are on the list as well. It is one of the more genuinely accommodating bars in this category without making a production of it.
