The Taco Bar That Helped Shape What Wicker Park Became
Paul Kahan's honky-tonk taqueria has been running on house-made tortillas, hand-picked vinyl, and a patio that defines the neighborhood since 2009. The tacos are fine. The experience is the point.
Big Star is an homage to the honky-tonk bars of Bakersfield, California, which is a strange and specific reference for a taco joint in Wicker Park — and also exactly the kind of move that made One Off Hospitality worth paying attention to in 2009. Paul Kahan's group had already built The Publican and avec and The Violet Hour by the time Big Star opened on Damen. Adding a cheap taco bar to that portfolio was either a joke or a flex. Turns out it was neither. It was a neighborhood institution in the making.
The walk-up taco window was the tell. A James Beard Award-winning chef opening a walk-up window told you something about the intent. This was not a concept designed for press coverage. It was designed for the block.
Sixteen years later it is still on the block, and the patio is still one of the best places to spend a summer afternoon in Chicago. That patio is the reason most people are here on a good weather day — not the food, not the cocktail program, not the bourbon list, impressive as that last one is. The patio, the sun, the vinyl coming through the speakers, the general feeling of being somewhere that has not been optimized for anything except a good time.
The soundtrack deserves a specific mention. Bar staff pick what goes on. The result is an eclectic run through country and classic rock that sounds like someone's actual record collection rather than a curated playlist designed to set a mood. It sets a mood anyway.
The food is where to calibrate expectations honestly. The tacos are made with house-made tortillas and the kitchen takes the sourcing seriously. The asada is the one to get — the strongest of the available options, with enough char and seasoning to remind you that a good taco does not need much. The rest of the menu, nachos and elote included, does what it is there to do without pushing beyond it. This is not a destination taco situation. It is a very good bar that serves tacos, and that framing makes everything land correctly.
Non-drinking members of the party are not left out. A couple of NA beers and basic mocktails are available, which matters for a place whose social identity is built almost entirely around margaritas and bourbon. The cocktail program is built for drinkers who want to have fun, and it succeeds at that. The NA options are an accommodation rather than a statement, but they exist and they work.
Big Star is Fine as food and essential as experience. Those are not the same rating and they are both true.
