Bad Coffee Named Itself Honestly by Accident

Great space, playful concept, alley entrance, dog friendly, connected to a live performance venue. The cappuccino will undo all of it.

How The Ratings Work

The Promise

There is a version of Bad Coffee that works completely. The name is a wink, not an admission — the slogan is "Good People Drink Bad Coffee," and the whole concept leans into the irony of calling yourself that while presumably serving something worth drinking. The entrance is through an alley off Ravenswood, which should be annoying and instead feels like a discovery. The space connects through a hidden door to Live Bash, a performance and production venue with a stage used for music, comedy, and recordings. There is a piano. There are big open doors. Dogs are welcome. The local crowd fills it naturally. Every surface of this place signals that someone thought carefully about what they were building.

Then the cappuccino arrives.

I know the green flags. I also know the red ones. A steam wand that hasn't been purged. Foam that separates before the cup reaches the table. Milk that is too hot to drink and stays too hot twenty minutes later. These are not subtle signals. I let it sit and came back to it and when I finally tasted it the coffee was overextracted, burnt, and bitter in the way that tells you something went wrong at multiple points in the process simultaneously. Bad Coffee has its own branded bag and blend, which I want to give the benefit of the doubt — I cannot confirm whether the beans are the problem because the execution was troubled enough to obscure everything underneath it.

The baked goods are brought in rather than made in house. The muffin was slightly overmixed, the croissant was standard. Nothing wrong with either in the way that nothing is particularly right about them either. This is not a food destination and does not try to be, which is fine. The drinks are supposed to carry the visit.

The drinks do not carry the visit.

Bad Coffee has the bones of a genuinely good coffee shop and creative space hybrid. The Live Bash connection alone makes it interesting in a way most cafes cannot claim. If the coffee matched the concept, this would be an easy recommendation for anyone looking for a neighborhood spot with actual personality. It does not match the concept yet.
