Four Letter Word Is Not for You If You Want To Sit At a Laptop
4LW is Chicago's best coffee shop for people who actually care about coffee, and it doesn't have a sign outside to tell you that.
There's no sign outside. Just some shapes hanging from the side of a building. If you know, you know. If you don't, you walk past it and that's fine too. Four Letter Word is not trying to flag you down.
Inside, the atmosphere is eclectic and considered. Interesting art on the walls. Books on display the way a person with taste leaves books around — Jazz Clubs of Tokyo, that kind of thing. Old records in the back corner available to buy. The whole place feels like it was put together by someone who reads and listens and has been paying attention for a long time.
What you won't find is somewhere to sit. Ten chairs, maybe. A few bar seats, one communal table you might grab a spot at, a few standing tables. This is not a place to open your laptop, nurse a latte for three hours, and call it a workday. Four Letter Word is for people who are here for the coffee. That is a feature, not a limitation.
They roast their own beans. The machine is fully manual. The syrup list is short, two options, which tells you everything you need to know about where the priorities are. Barista to barista, the consistency is remarkable. Never too hot, which for me is a near-disqualifying offense at lesser shops. You'll notice the baristas are always playing great music. Unexpected, fun, never predictable. You'll also notice, if you go enough, that baristas from other shops around the city show up wearing 4LW gear. That's the kind of reputation that can't be manufactured.
If you're walking a dog or pushing a stroller, there's a walk-up window. Plenty of outdoor seating. On weekends they open a garage door into a small curated bookstore space where the selection is tight and specific. Prison Tattoos of Russia sits next to whatever local artist is doing a pop-up that weekend. It's the kind of thing that only works if someone has a genuine point of view, and someone here clearly does.
The food menu is minimal by design. Large proofed vegan donuts, a small rotating selection. The chocolate is big and sweet and worth sharing. If you want one to yourself, get the blueberry old fashioned. I say this as someone who will almost always choose a raised donut over an old fashioned. This one is the exception.
One more thing worth knowing: 4LW has a second location. It's on a small island in Istanbul. If you happen to find yourself there, go. The fact that this is a sentence I can write about a Chicago coffee shop tells you something about what kind of place this is.
On summer weekends expect a line. It moves fast. It's worth it.
