San Pa Tong is a few kilometers south of Chiang Mai, past the point where the density of the city gives way to something quieter and more residential. Finding a genuinely good coffee shop out here is not what you expect. On Fleek is not what you expect.
The building announces itself before you walk in. White, sculptural, sweeping arches, a lawn, generous indoor and outdoor seating spilling into the open air near the Nam Bo Luang intersection. This is a considered piece of architecture for a neighborhood cafe, and the interior follows through. Large tables, window seating, outdoor shade, workspace options, and private rooms if you need them. On Fleek is designed for lingering, and the space makes that easy.
The menu is broad in the way a good all-day cafe should be. Espresso drinks, teas, smoothies, sodas, cakes, bakery items, and savory food including pizza. The flavored coffee drinks lean accessible and seasonal — the Morning Berry and Strawberry Crumble Coffee have their following for good reason. But the standard espresso drinks are well made and the pastries hold up, which is the thing that surprises you most given how far this sits from Chiang Mai's dense cafe district.
When we are staying at my mother's place in San Pa Tong, this is the daily driver. Not because it is the most technically serious coffee shop in the region. Because it is exactly right for where it is and what it is trying to be.
