Prague is a primate city in a small country, which means it soaks up most of the Czech Republic's population and attention by default. Brno, the second-largest city and the capital of Moravia, sits under half a million people, which makes its center feel small, quaint, and genuinely charming rather than like a second-tier Prague. What it lacks in scale, it makes up for in a coffee scene that punches far above its weight, and Monogram is the clearest proof of that.

Adam Neubauer, a multi-time Czech Barista Champion, built the shop as an intimate, no-nonsense temple to the craft, tucked onto a small square just opposite the Capuchin Crypt, on a street so steep and diagonal that it meets the front door at an angle. The rules here are strict on purpose. No Wi-Fi. No corporate distractions. Just precision espresso, meticulous filter coffee, and a rotating cast of top-tier guest roasters served alongside Neubauer's own Monogram beans, roasted locally.

The drinks were perfection. The space matched that precision exactly, modern and minimalist but warm rather than clinical, cozy in a way that a shop this design-forward doesn't always manage, with flower arrangements that softened the whole room. No Wi-Fi turns out to be the right call. It builds a space for actual conversation and quiet reading rather than laptops lined up along a counter, and the effect is a shop built for connection instead of work.

The baristas were friendly, sharp, and clearly well versed in their craft, which matched everything Neubauer's reputation promised going in. This was a standout for the entire country, not just the city, and I came home with several bags of the beans because one visit wasn't enough.
